Types of air purifiers

You can find 3 main types of HVAC air purifiers:

High-Merv Media Filter

High-MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) is like a normal air filter in that they catch airborne pollutants as the HVAC “inhales” your home’s air. Because high-MERV filters are much finer and denser, they grab pollutants as small as smoke particles and bacteria. MERV is how the industry rates the efficiency of a filter as it removes pollutants from your home’s air. Higher MERV ratings represent a “catch value” of much finer particulates. The filter with the highest possible rating is a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter. That has a MERV rating between 17-20.

UV Air Purifiers

UV air purifiers, sometimes referred to as “germicidal air purifiers”, employ an ultraviolet (UV) light source to kill microbial airborne contaminants that are floating in the air of your home. This includes nasty organisms such as bacteria, fungi, molds, viruses, etc. The downside of this process is that it sterilizes the contaminants, but it does not actually remove them. So, we suggest that if you use this technology in your home, you pair it with a germicidal air purifier with a high-MERV filter.

Electronic/Ionic Air Purifier

The second kind of air filter is the Ionic Air Filter. These are sometimes referred to as “electronic air cleaners”. They are ingenious air filters that use an electronically charged metal-infused layer. When any particle pas through that layer, they are changed in to a positively charged particle so they stick to the media filter.
