DIY FURNACE FIXeS

Before calling a professional, try these simple repairs.

Furnace is blowing, but its cold.

Thermostat Switch: See that your switch is on “HEAT” rather than “COOL”. (Seems obvious but is often an issue)

Air Filter: See if the filter is dirty. Dust and dirt can clog the filter and is the source of many furnace problems. Swap it for a new one.
Pilot Light: Is your pilot out? In older gas furnaces there is usually an “always on” pilot light. If it’s not on, simply relight it. If this problem keeps re-occurring, you need a tech to inspect it.
Gas Supply: Your furnace needs gas to heat your house. Check the gas lever on the valve to make sure it is on. The ON position is parallel to the supply line.

Furnace is not blowing any air - hot or cool

Thermostat Batteries: Check the batteries. The furnace will not even turn itself on if your batteries are dead.
Vents: Check your vents to see that they are open and unobstructed. See that the supply vent that pushes out the hot air didn’t get closed. Also, look at the return vents and remove obstructions. Those vents pull cold air from your home into the furnace.

Circuit Breaker: Look at your breaker box and find the circuit for the furnace. Make sure it is in the ON position. If it keeps turning itself off, then it's time to call a professional because you have a bigger problem.
